I just had the great misfortune to read an article in the Mail Online by Clare O’Reilly http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1338937/Why-I-enjoy-glass-3-wine-pregnancy-police-telling-Im-evil.html. This article is about Clare drinking during each of her pregnancies…choosing to drink during these pregnancies. She is writing particularly about her current pregnancy. She is saying that she is well educated regarding the dangers of drinking while pregnant but is continuing to choose to drink.
I sit in awed stupor at the fact that ANYONE would willingly choose to drink. I have great compassion for women who are struggling with addictions or are misinformed. Through this it is possible for women to prenatally expose their child. However, here is a woman by her own words who is educated about the dangers and yet she is making (according to her) an “educated decision to drink”. She feels that this drinking is even making her children smarter. I absolutely challenge this…I challenge all of her assertations. All of the medical research will tell you that what she says is false.
I truly worry that by trying to make a point this woman, Clare O’Reilly is willingly harming a child…HER CHILD. So often the damage done by prenatal exposure doesn’t show up until the fourth grade. So really with the ages of her children she does not know that there has been no harm done. Also each pregnancy can have different damage sometimes progressive. She is stating that she is drinking daily and sometimes multiple times within a day. She states she is proud of making this point as she doesn’t need the “pregnancy police” to tell her what to do.
I understand wanting to make choices about our bodies and our pregnancies but I do not understand how anyone could chance giving their child Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD is the leading cause of mental retardation in the western world. FASD is a disorder that is a physical disability where the person has issues in almost every area of their lives and may not qualify for any assistance while desperately needing it. So why would anyone choose to take the chance of giving their baby this disorder?
Pick a different battle Clare O’Reilly. This is a battle where if you lose you will have done irreparable harm to your children. THERE IS NO KNOWN SAFE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL DURING A PREGNANCY…the only safe thing to do is to have no alcohol during pregnancy!
